The AI search numbers we build strategy on
Every figure here is named, sourced and dated. We publish it because we make recommendations with real money attached to them, and you're entitled to check the evidence. It's also, frankly, a demonstration: pages that cite sources are the pages AI engines cite back.
Compiled August 2026. Figures are as reported by the named study; methodology and date ranges differ, so read them as directional rather than interchangeable.
The click is disappearing
| Finding | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Google searches ending without a click, early 2026 | 68% | SparkToro / Similarweb US panel, Jan–Apr 2026 |
| The same measure roughly ten years earlier | ~45% | SparkToro / Similarweb |
| Share of Google searches showing an AI Overview | 20%+ | Similarweb, 2026 |
| Zero-click rate inside Google AI Mode | 93% | Similarweb panel, Jan–Apr 2026 |
| Zero-click rate on searches with an AI Overview | 43% | Similarweb panel, Jan–Apr 2026 |
What we take from it: traffic-volume goals are now the wrong target for most small businesses. Presence in the answer, and the high-intent local searches that still send clicks, are where the money is.
Local businesses are largely invisible to assistants
| Finding | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Local business locations ChatGPT recommends at all | 1.2% | SOCi Local Visibility Index, 2026 |
| Restaurants absent from AI-generated local recommendations | 83% | SOCi Local Visibility Index, 2026 |
| AI Overview citations coming from top-10 organic results | 16.7% | BrightEdge, 16-month study |
| Overlap between AI Overview citations and organic rankings | 32% → 54% | BrightEdge, over 16 months |
What we take from it: this is an open field, not a contested one. And because most citations come from pages ranking outside the top ten, a small business can be quoted before it out-ranks the incumbent — the cheapest visibility available right now, for as long as it lasts.
Where AI referral traffic comes from
| Finding | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Increase in ChatGPT referral traffic, May 2026 | +36.7% | SE Ranking, 101,574 sites |
| Share of site referral traffic coming from ChatGPT, May 2026 | 0.32% | SE Ranking (up from 0.23% in April) |
| ChatGPT's share of all AI referral traffic | ~76%, falling | SE Ranking, 2026 |
| Top-cited domains inside Google AI Mode | Wikipedia, Reddit, YouTube | Industry citation analyses, 2026 |
What we take from it: AI referral volume is still small in absolute terms and growing fast. Treat it as a position to take early and cheaply, not as a channel to move your whole budget into today. Anyone telling you to abandon search for AI is overselling.
Speed to lead — the oldest finding, still ignored
lower odds of contact at 30 minutes versus 5 minutes. Qualification odds fall 21× across the same window.
MIT / InsideSales — 6 companies, 15,000+ leads, 100,000+ call attemptsmore likely to qualify a lead when contacted inside the first hour. Wait 24 hours and it's 60× less likely.
Harvard Business Review — 2.24m leadsaverage first response to a web lead. Only 37% of firms replied within an hour; 23% never replied at all.
Harvard Business Review audit — 2,241 US companiesWhat we take from it: for a lot of small businesses the cheapest available growth isn't more leads — it's answering the ones already arriving. We check response time in every diagnostic, and when it's the binding constraint we say so before selling anything else.

Reading these numbers properly
What percentage of Google searches end without a click?
About 68% of Google searches ended without a click in early 2026, according to SparkToro and Similarweb's US panel analysis covering January to April 2026. That's up from roughly 45% a decade earlier, and the sharpest acceleration came in the two years following the rollout of AI Overviews.
Do AI assistants recommend local businesses?
Yes, but very few of them. SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index found ChatGPT recommends just 1.2% of all local business locations, and 83% of restaurants don't appear in AI-generated local recommendations at all. Most local businesses are currently invisible to assistants rather than ranked poorly by them.
Do you have to rank on page one to be cited by AI?
No. BrightEdge's 16-month study found only 16.7% of AI Overview citations come from top-10 organic results — most cited pages rank between 21 and 100. Citation-overlap with organic rankings did grow from 32% to 54%, so organic strength helps, but it isn't a prerequisite.
How quickly should a business respond to a new lead?
Within five minutes. MIT/InsideSales found the odds of making contact drop roughly 100x when the first call goes out at 30 minutes instead of five, and qualification odds fall 21x. Harvard Business Review's audit of 2,241 US companies found the average first response took 42 hours.
Should a small business shift budget from SEO to AI search?
Not wholesale. AI referral traffic is growing fast but still small in absolute terms — ChatGPT accounted for about 0.32% of site referral traffic in May 2026 per SE Ranking. The rational play is to hold high-intent search and take AI visibility early, while it's cheap and uncontested.

Every engagement starts the same way: a 20-minute call, then a written read on where your customers are actually looking for you and what it would take to be the answer they find.
You'll get a straight recommendation — including "you don't need us for this," when that's the honest answer. If a Lead Network already covers your trade and territory, we'll say so, because that's the faster route and you'd rather know.
