Answer Engine Optimization

When someone asks an AI to recommend a business like yours, something gets named. Make it you.

AEO is the work of becoming the source that ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot cite and recommend. It overlaps with SEO, it isn't the same thing, and right now most local businesses are invisible to it entirely.

What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring a business's information so AI assistants can understand it, trust it, and quote it when answering a user's question. Where SEO competes for a ranked link, AEO competes to be the source inside the answer — which is increasingly where the decision gets made, because the user never sees a results page.

Why does AEO matter now?

Because the click is disappearing. Roughly 68% of Google searches ended without a click in early 2026, and AI assistants now answer “who should I call for X near me” directly. If the assistant doesn't know you exist, you're not in a lower position — you're not in the conversation.

Is AEO just SEO with a new name?

No, though they share a foundation. Strong organic presence feeds AI citations — overlap between AI Overview citations and organic rankings grew from 32% to 54% over 16 months per BrightEdge. But AEO adds work SEO never needed: entity consistency, machine- readable structure, extractable answer formatting, and presence on the third-party sources assistants lean on.

The opportunity, stated plainly

Almost nobody in your trade has done this yet.

1.2%

of local business locations are recommended by ChatGPT at all — and among restaurants, 83% don't appear in AI-generated local recommendations whatsoever.

16.7%

of AI Overview citations come from top-10 organic results. Most cited pages rank 21–100 — meaning you can be quoted without out-ranking the incumbent first.

That second number is the one worth sitting with. In classic SEO you had to beat the established competitor to get seen. In AI answers, you have to be the clearest and most quotable source on the specific question — a much cheaper thing to win, and a window that closes as everyone catches on.

The work

What we actually do to get you cited

1. Entity clarity

An assistant can only recommend a business it can unambiguously identify. We fix the single plain statement of what you are, what you do and where you do it — and make it identical everywhere it appears: your site, your Google Business Profile, directories, review platforms, social profiles. Contradictions are the most common reason a real business reads as noise.

2. Structured data, seriously

LocalBusiness with full service area and geography, Service markup on every offering, FAQPage on every page carrying questions, breadcrumbs sitewide, HowTo on process content. This is how a machine reads you without guessing. Most small business sites carry either nothing or a broken fragment their theme injected.

3. Answer-first content

Every page opens with a direct, self-contained answer to the question the page is about — roughly 40 to 60 words, quotable without surrounding context — then goes deeper. Assistants lift passages, not pages. Content that buries the point is content that never gets extracted.

4. Citable substance

Named, sourced numbers. Real local specifics. A data or reference page that says something nobody else has published. Assistants preferentially cite sources that themselves cite sources — which is exactly why this page you're reading names every study it quotes.

5. The machine-readable layer

llms.txt and a condensed full-content file, clean semantic HTML, fast static pages, descriptive alt text, sitemaps that stay accurate. Unglamorous, quick, and it removes every excuse a crawler has to skip you.

6. Off-site presence

Assistants lean heavily on third-party sources — review platforms, directories, Reddit, YouTube, “best of” roundups. We work the surfaces that matter in your category, because your own site is only ever part of what an assistant reads about you.

How we measure it

AEO has no rank tracker, so we measure it the honest way: we ask. On a set schedule we put the questions your customers would actually ask to ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot — “best septic company near [town]”, “who does emergency [service] in [area]” — and record whether you're named, how you're described, and who's named instead.

That produces a plain scoreboard over time: mentions, citation of your pages, accuracy of what's said about you, and share against named competitors. Alongside it we track the leading indicators that move first — AI-referred sessions, branded search volume, and the proportion of enquiries that arrive already knowing what you do.

Straight answers

More on AEO

How long does AEO take to work?

Faster than classic SEO, typically. Technical and entity fixes can change how assistants describe a business within weeks, because models re-read the web continuously and much of the problem is simply being unreadable. Winning contested recommendations takes longer — plan on three to six months of compounding.

Can you guarantee ChatGPT will recommend my business?

No, and anyone who guarantees it is selling something. Assistant outputs vary by user, phrasing and model version. What we can do is make you the clearest, best-structured, most citable option in your category and area — and then measure honestly whether you're getting named.

Does AEO replace SEO?

No. Organic strength is one of the inputs AI systems use to decide who's credible, and the map pack still drives high-intent local calls. Treat AEO as a second front that shares most of its foundation with SEO, not as a replacement for it.

What's the difference between AEO and GEO?

Very little in practice. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) and AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) are used interchangeably for the same work: getting cited inside AI-generated answers. Some practitioners use GEO for chat assistants and AEO for featured snippets and voice, but the underlying playbook is the same.

Tell us the bottleneck. We'll tell you what we'd do.

Every engagement starts the same way: a 20-minute call, then a written read on where your customers are actually looking for you and what it would take to be the answer they find.

You'll get a straight recommendation — including "you don't need us for this," when that's the honest answer. If a Lead Network already covers your trade and territory, we'll say so, because that's the faster route and you'd rather know.

No pitch deck. A 20-minute call and a written read on your situation.
